天津美术馆举办的“个体生长:当代艺术的动力”是由策展人杜曦云策划的大型当代艺术展。本次展览被划分为直面现场、观照权利、直觉身体、融入日常、反思传统、衍变学院6个主题,参展艺术家37位,包括了油画、装置、摄影、录像等形式的65件/组作品。

展览以“个体生长”为题,关注个体意识,将它视作现代文明的基础。主体性、个体主义等概念,乃是个体意识在不同语境中的说法。处于社会群体中的个体,不断受到别人的影响。但自己的真切感受是衡量一切的最初和最终标准。当意识到任何话语、观念都需要经过自己的检验时,个体意识就逐渐苏醒和生长起来。这时,作为个体的自己独立了起来,不再依附、盲从、迷信别人。当然,也需要接受独立所带来的后果:一切由自己承担,无论好坏对错。

伴随着对历史的反思和对现代文明的汲取,个体意识在越来越多的中国人心中苏醒、生长和推进。当代艺术家属于人群中较为敏感者,个体意识在他们身上更早的萌发、更明显的表露出来。随着个体意识的生长,他们从各自的生存处境出发,发现社会现状中存在的各种问题,敏锐的进行表达,形成话语来传播个体意识,和更多的人发生互动。

本次参展的艺术家中,有的已是名家,有的则非常年青,他们关注的问题各不相同,但他们都对个体意识有明显的追求,从而有独到的发现和创造。作为彼此差异的个体,他们在独立体验和思考的过程中,产生自由而自在的表达,形成多元的艺术形态。但在他们貌似彼此不同的作品中,又有着共同的生存背景和相似的生命诉求,这与每个人共存于此的中国当下社会密切相关。

直面现场
Facing the Scene
瞬息万变的社会现场,以它的复杂变动,不断刺激人的认知和承受力。面对真实的生存处境,有的人虚构美好的乌托邦,在其中获取安慰;有的人则直面社会现场,发现真实的问题并进行表达。当面对社会现场时,敏锐的感知和独立的思考,会更加接近被掩盖和扭曲的事物真相、被忽视或无视的生存困境等。面对这些问题,身处不同位置、境遇的人,选择不同的立场、态度。
Complex and volatile social scenes keep stimulating people’s cognitive and enduring abilities. Some people seek comfort from a utopian illusion; some find problems and express them facing the reality in real life. Sharp perception and independent thinking are closer to covered and twisted truth as well as overlooked or ignored living difficulties in life. People in different positions or situations hold different stances and attitudes when confronting these problems.

观照权利
Concerning Rights
个体意识的生长,意味着人们意识到了个体权利的重要性。当从个体权利的角度看待具体的社会现象时,很多问题显现出来。这些问题,又与特定文化所塑造的思维方式密切关联。当文化让忽视个人权利的思维方式形成惯性时,这种思维方式的松动和改变,也需要强烈的刺激和持久的影响。
Growing individual consciousness means people have increasingly realized the importance of personal rights. Problems closely related with thinking pattern determined by a certain culture emerge when specific social phenomenon is viewed in an individual right’s perspective. To let loose and change the culture-overlooks-personal-rights mode of thinking requires intense stimulation and lasting influence when it has already come into a pattern.

直觉身体
Intuitive Body
对个体而言,活生生的直觉是最真切的,也是最可靠的。在感知和行动中,潜在的依据始终是直觉。意识到直觉的重要性,个体意识更为清醒和确切。在直觉的感知和行动中,可以更清醒的了解自己的思维方式和行动方式,以及了解别人,进而了解人与人的关系、人与具体的社会、世界的关系等。在这个过程中,一切在渐渐改变。
Intuition, the most real and reliable thing for individuals, guides our perception and action unconsciously. Personal senses will be clearer and more exact when intuition’s significance is realized. We can have a better understanding of our thinking modes, action approaches, people and even the relations between people to people, human and a specific society and the world during perception and action of intuitions. Everything is changing during this process.

融入日常
Entering Daily Life
艺术作为人的一种表达方式,与社会母体有着密切的关系。当玄远的推想显得虚幻而不切实际时,和日常生活发生紧密关联,就更为实在和真切。艺术一旦试图和日常生活发生关系,对其现状及问题的了解,以及寻找或创造出有效的方式来影响它,就变得非常重要。这充满难度,但也会拓展出全新的可能性。
As a kind of expression, art is closely related with society. It’s ever more real and practical to have connections with daily life when illusions seem vague and impractical. It’s critical to have a good understanding of the status quo and problems as well as searching for or creating effective ways to influence it once art tries to get involved with daily life. It’s difficult but also breeds new potentials.

反思传统
Reflecting on Traditions
本土传统是难以回避的,不管人们是否愿意承认它,但它形成了强大的文化氛围,至今依然强烈影响着中国人的思维方式和行动方式。但传统非常庞杂,很难笼统的对它进行评判。以国际视野和现代文明的角度来看待传统时,它的利弊才能看的更清楚。这时,更重要的是开放的心态和对现代文明的了解。
Local traditions are hard to avoid, whether people like to admit it or not, they have formed a strong cultural atmosphere, and are still affecting Chinese people’s thinking and acting modes. However, traditions are too complex and hard to be judged with the same standard. Their strength and weakness are only viewed clearer when seen in a perspective of international and modern civilization. At this point, it’s more important to have open attitudes and a good understanding of modern civilization.

衍变学院
Transforming Academies
从20世纪70年代末至今,当代艺术由最初被视为离经叛道,逐渐变得被更多的人接受乃至推崇,这是文化逐步开放的结果。其中,学院内部对当代艺术的态度,也在发生着明显的变化:由回避到接受、提倡。这与学院中开明人士的努力有直接关系。经过他们的坚持创作和长期教育,学院的艺术生态发生了明显的变化。
Contemporary art had been perceived as a departure from established practices since the late 1970s, but it is gradually getting more recognition and even recommendation thanks to a more open culture. A clear shift of attitudes inside academies towards contemporary art is going on—from avoidance to acceptance and promotion, which is pushed forward by those open-minded academicians. Art environment in academies has clearly shifted through their persistent creation and long-time education.
